From Her Pockets

This handmade chapbook contains an excerpt from the novel All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr. In this scene, Marie-Laure, a blind girl, explores a beach for the first time. I designed this book to reflect the airiness of the scene as well as the tactile, random nature of finding objects along a beach.

I illustrated and laser cut the cover to reflect the airiness and fragility of the excerpt. The materiality of this small book reflects the tactile interactions in the story as Marie-Laure delicately collects shells.

I typeset this piece to reflect the randomness of objects scattered along a beach. This book is printed on translucent vellum so the pages create a layered effect, much like waves washing ashore.
